Setup guide
Commands are copied from the project's README and official docs.
- 1
Prepare Docker for Community Edition
Install and run Docker Desktop, or use the documented AWS EC2 option with at least a t3.medium/t3a.medium instance and install Docker usingcurl -fsSL https://get.docker.com | sh -. Your user must have access to Docker services. Use a terminal, or Git Bash on Windows. - 2
Create the deployment folder
Runmkdir plane-selfhost, thencd plane-selfhost. - 3
Download and launch the setup script
Runcurl -fsSL -o setup.sh https://github.com/makeplane/plane/releases/latest/download/setup.sh, thenchmod +x setup.sh, then./setup.sh. - 4
Install Community Edition files
Enter 1 to install. The script creates plane-app, or plane-app-preview for preview deployments, and downloads docker-compose.yaml and plane.env. Enter 8 to exit. - 5
Configure ports and the access address
Edit plane.env. Set LISTEN_HTTP_PORT and LISTEN_HTTPS_PORT to unused ports; their defaults are 80 and 443. Set WEB_URL and CORS_ALLOWED_ORIGINS to your intended domain or IP address with the appropriate port. - 6
Start Plane
Run./setup.shand enter 2. Wait for the images to download and services to start, then open your configured IP address or domain.

What it costs
| Software | Free to self-host under the AGPL-3.0 licence. |
|---|---|
| Hosting | For the documented 2-core, 4–8GB RAM sizing, budget roughly $20–60 per month for a VPS; check current prices. External databases and storage may cost extra. This sizing is stated for the Commercial Docker guide. |
| Paid cloud option | Plane Cloud offers free account signup. Separately, the self-hosted Commercial Edition starts on a Free plan with 12 seats per workspace; Pro, Business, and Enterprise Grid features require a licence key. |
FAQ
Is Plane free and open source?
The repository is licensed under AGPL-3.0, and the Docker documentation includes Community Edition installation steps. A separate Commercial Edition offers free and paid plans.
Does the main Docker installer install Community Edition?
No. The first installer in the supplied Docker guide installs Commercial Edition. The setup steps in this listing use the separate Community Edition instructions.
Can I use Plane without managing a server?
Yes. The README links to Plane Cloud, where you can sign up for a free account.
Can I migrate from another project management tool?
The product documentation lists importers for Jira, Asana, Linear, ClickUp, and other tools. Check the official docs for migration details.
Are all listed features and integrations included in Community Edition?
The supplied pages describe Plane broadly but do not provide a complete edition-by-edition feature comparison. Check the official docs before relying on a particular feature or integration in Community Edition.
Troubleshooting
Plane cannot use its configured HTTP or HTTPS port.
Check whether the port is already occupied. Set LISTEN_HTTP_PORT and LISTEN_HTTPS_PORT in plane.env to available ports.
Plane is configured for localhost instead of the intended domain or IP.
Update WEB_URL and CORS_ALLOWED_ORIGINS in plane.env to the intended address and port. The guide recommends stopping services before editing environment variables, then starting them again.
Services behave unexpectedly after configuration changes.
Run ./setup.sh and enter 4 to restart services. The setup menu also provides option 6 to view logs.
Docker Compose execution fails or the migrator container exits.
Check logs and confirm Docker is running and accessible to your user. Check the Compose version with docker-compose --version; the guide recommends the latest version. No specific migrator fix is supplied; see the official docs.
